The Independent Characters Hobby Progress Challenge

There is a podcast that I really enjoy, it’s call The Independent Characters.

The topic is Warhammer 40,000 by Games Workshop. And only Warhammer 40,000 from Games Workshop.

The main force behind it is a guy name Carl Tuttle. He was wing manned by Geoff who recently left the show and he now has others who help him out.

Soooo, now you’ve heard about the Hobby Progress Challenge.

This is a great way to get unpainted mini’s off the board, painted and back on the board.

I signed up and am doing Orks.

Instead of making people go all over the inter webs to follow what I’m doing, I’m going to try to do it here on my blog.

I really need to thank my wife, Rose for her support in me doing this. She asked what I wanted for my Bday and I stated I’d like to participate in this.

I’ve had a little setback due to having 4 hernias that needed repair, but figure that I’ll bounce back and get my game on.

So here’s the First two units done.

I’m currently working on a bunch of Burna’ Boys. Not sure why I decided to do them, but burning things in Warhammer 40,000 is a good thing.. if you get that close.

Audio Drama's

Audio Drama's....

Today I purchased a Games Workshop Audio Drama.  Curiosity was killing me.  I grew up listening to radio drama's and wanted the same experience that I had when I was a kid.   This post is a review and comparison of two audio drama's.

The one I purchased today is from Games Workshop's Black Library division Red & Black, written by James Swallow and performed by Beth Chalmers and Lisa Bowerman.

When I read the cover, that it was performed by only two people, I was skeptical of how well it would be produced.  I'm pretty sure that the production quality would have been good as far as sound quality, etc., after all it is a Games Workshop production.  My concern was with it actually not being a radio drama or radio play that I remember from my childhood.

I will be comparing this radio drama to the radio drama produced by Noise Monster Productions series, based on the RPG Space 1889. Unfortunately I cannot provide a link, as their site is down and they are no longer available for purchase (that I can find except for eBay). The production value on these was phenomenal. It was like listening to your radio back in the 1930’s and 40’s. Before TV ruined it all.

The drama starts off with a narration of how the Sisters of Battle came into being. Not sure who Games Workshop thought their target audience is for these, but I would think that people who play or at least read about Warhammer 40,000 would also be picking this item up as well. But then if someone who is not fan picks it up, then having the intro gives the listener a reason for why the Sisters of Battle “Are”.....

The Narrator talks through 80% of the story, with only about 20% being actual “acting”.

I was very disappointed by this. What I would really like for Games Workshop to do is to create a real, and I mean 1930’s type real audio drama. I want a movie without the visuals, I want to hear feet running and actors/characters speaking like they would in the book and the Narration should only take up 10-15% of the actual speaking. EVERYTHING ELSE should be sound effects, etc. I remember when I collected comic books and actually met Stan Lee 30 years ago, he stated that the writer of the comic AND the artist working together should allow the reader to understand the story without reading a word….

That was very powerful and is what made Marvel a powerhouse, dwarfing DC for years.

That is what I want in an Audio drama. I want a 2 hour movie without the visuals and be able to “see” the action in my mind just from the character interaction and the sound effects should tell the whole story.

I also have purchased The Ascension of Balthasar.. and again was sorely disappointed. It states two disks, so I thought, 2 disks worth of audio drama… NOPE!

So fool me once Games Workshop, shame on you… fool me twice, shame on me.

I won’t be purchasing ANY more Audio Drama’s from Games Workshop.

I do hope that one day they actually do what I want in an Audio Drama and I get some really good “radio” to listen to while I’m painting their miniatures.

What my painting looks like...

Since I've stated I've been painting, I thought I'd share some photo's. My Necron's have had a coat of Boltgun Metal for about a year now. I started putting a heavy dry brush of GW's Chainmail to give it some highlights. I'll be following that up with a very light Mithril Silver on just the high area's that might get some light. That should make the POP a little. With all the Necrons I have though, it's tough... ie monotonous.

You can also see the Vampire Evil Cossack Guards in the mix as well as some Warhammer Tomb Kings, part of a Carniflex, the actual Vampires for the Evil Cossacks to Guard, a Mage Knight figure that needs Fixin' and an AT-43 Red Block that needs fixin too.

Some Necrons wait in silence... waiting for the stroke of Chainmail :D

I finished my Werewolves a while ago (along with their wolf "henchmen" that I can sacrifice during a game of Chaos in Carpathia as needed.

Painting Again

It’s been a while. Trying to get the Real Estate Business up and running along with the Day Job has been a massive Time Sink.

In order to try to get some stress relief I started watching Mini Wargaming Dot Com terrain videos. I really like how Dave and Matt put the time and effort into creating the video’s that they do. Unfortunately to get the video’s first hand, you have to belong to their Vault, and I’m a little too cheap for that. So I have to wait. I do purchase the DVD collections that they come up with and they are quite good and definitely worth the money.

So, what am I painting?

I’m trying to get my Cossack Dracula Guards (by Old Glory Miniatures) ready to use with Chaos in Carpathia. (Highly recommended ruleset btw).

While I wait for the paint to dry on those mini’s, I am drybrushing GW’s Chainmail onto my Necrons to give them some highlights. Since I purchased the large battleforce that GW does not offer anymore, I have 90 warriors, a Necron Lord, 6 Destroyers, and a Monolith. That’s a lot of dry brushing. Hell that was a lot of Bolt Gun metal over Chaos Black....

Where does the Time Go?

Jeesh.

Been Months since I wrote something here.

With the move almost 16 months ago, I am still unorganized and have not had the gumption to get oranized.

I built my great countertop in the bonus room and now it sits covered with “stuff”.

My employer wants me to work from home on Fridays, working later into the evening for those “OMG!!” circumstances that happen now and again. In order to set this up, I had to eat away more of my precious countertop/desk space for a 2nd monitor and computer hook up. Of course if I take time off from work to deal with it (ie straighten it out and clean up the wires, etc) my Significant Other will want to go out of town, or I really don’t see it as being “away” from work.

So the depression sets in from not being able to hobby or game and it just sits....

But I still buy stuff and it gets added to the pile of stuff I still need to organize and work on..... (Lather, Rinse, Repeat)

A real bright spot is that I’m actually starting to work on the engineering behind actually making the display boards that I’ve been creating for my own troops for the masses. My eldest likes helping here because it takes engineering and that is what is wants to study as a career. We bounce ideas for stuff off of each other as I make mock-ups of what the final product should look like. Mmmm Mmmm GOOD!

AT-43

If you've been watching the Gaming News, then you have heard that Rackham Entertainment is being liquidated. Hopefully another company will pick up the IP for both AT-43 and Confrontation.

Mix that with a shop in Redmond Washington called Games and Gizmos that had a 1/4 wall of AT-43 they were trying to get rid of at 30% off.

I had been in buying a little at a time..... then I took a Real Estate Class and the montra was "ask for the discount".

So when we (the mrs and I) were in and I was going to get some more, my MRS. asked "if he buys it all, can we get an extra discount"..... Well the woman who was helping us had "decision making authority" so it wound up being a really NICE DISCOUNT. So I purchased the whole lot. Most were Karman and Therian with some UNA and Red Block intermixed.

I feel bad kinda because I know they lost money on that deal, but then business decisions need to be made (so they can put up stock that will actually move). So I purchased Pulp Monster's Pulp City boxed Sets of the Heroe's and Villans at full retail, and I'll be back for more.

But Here's the mix of AT-43 items (unboxed, magnetized and marked for identification)



And yes, I've been absent for a bit (gee is that a surprise?) but I burned out at work and tried for another position, didn't get it but got another one. So things have settled down, which means (hopefully) that I'll be able to put more time into my Favorite hobby as well as this blog.

GW's Army Painting Contest

My local GW (the only LGS near me) is having a contest. You choose one of the Space Marine Chapters listed on a poster they have hanging in the store, purchase a box of Space Marines in Power Armor (no Terminators or Scouts because they have “Terminator Armor” and “Scout Armor”), then paint them up to look like the chapter you chose. Then one model from each chapter will be placed in a display case with the person who painted it and the chapter listed. The one unit that is voted “best painted” will get to create their own chapter and that will replace the “erased” listed on the poster hanging in the store. AND the life size model of the Space Marine that is the Icon of the store will be repainted with those colors chosen by the person who wins.

My Wife deiced that the whole family should get involved. At first I thought we’d pick one Chapter and then we’d all paint our units to look the same, but then only 1 model get’s in the case.... so we all picked a chapter and a unit box of 5 models. My wife wants to have some sort of posterity in the store since I spend so much $$ on GW products, this way we support the store community and not just the store.

I chose the Black Dragons. Not my first choice, but the Grey Knights were already taken. I will painting a Devastator Squad.
My wife chose the Hawk Lords, mainly because they were purple.... and a Combat Squad to paint.
Eldest chose Knights of the Raven and will painting up a Sternguard Veteran Squad
Middle Child chose Salamanders and will painting an Assault Squad.
Youngest chose Death Eagles and will be painting up a Combat Squad.

The only obstacle I can see hitting is the logo’s of each of the Armies above since GW does not produce emblems for each and every Chapter they list. I know that The Bolter & Chainsword Forums have dedicated members who create downloadable images that can be used to print out the decals on transfer paper. Since I have a color laser printer, I’m hoping to obtain some decal paper and actually try printing them out and seeing how it works to actually put them on... freehand painting that small is extremely hard and I really don’t have the time or inclination to do so.

At The Moment, my middle son is the one most enthusiastic about this endeavor. I’m really swamped at work, coming home and putting in another 3-4 hours remotely. Nice that I can do from the comfort of my own home, but it cuts into family time.... which my wife considers this event. A chance to have our family do something together and encourage each other to complete the task. My youngest and eldest are not that enthalled and are like “sure Mom”.... while still sitting at the computer playing Modern Warfare 2.... when she says we should start working on them. My wife has not been enthralled in the past with doing this type of hobby, but she’s grown to it and really wants to learn how to build/paint the miniatures. I’m hoping I have the patience to do it.

As I stated my Middle Son is the most enthusiastic. When he goes to play at the GW, people treat him as a fellow gamer and they don’t judge him based on his Autism, they judge him on how good a player he is. While he loses almost all games (he’s probably 5 wins to 100 loses, but he really get’s into the game and when he has his Warboss declare a WAAAAAGH... my son does just that..... at the top of his lungs he bellows out “WAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!” It is awesome and since he hasn’t been able to go and play, the store personnel and other gamers always ask if he’s coming back to play since they miss his antics acting like an Ork. I’m glad he’s found a place where he’s accepted.

With the new house, I've stated that I should be hobby-ing and playing very soon.

Well, the first few steps have been completed. I already spoke of the workshop... that's coming along wonderfully. Just need to be better organized on what goes in there and what goes in.....

My new HOBBY ROOM!!!

I put up a kitchen countertop to use as a desk/hobby table. And it is WONDERFUL. Just got it up today and got my MAC setup and all... HMM HMM GOOD! Take a look!







Now there's plenty of room to work from home (as necessary) AND be able to build, paint, etc.... The Room is now a disaster area (had to move a bookcase) with books, old desk, etc taking up lots of room. I need to move the display cases so they actually look good in the room, etc and have room for the bookshelf for all the rulebooks, etc.

I'm also designing two gaming tables that will go in the room so we have a place to actually play. I'll be making them modular in nature so if necessary they can either fold up or be attached together depending on the size of the game played...

Come to think of it, having six 2x2' tables instead of two 4x6' tables. I haven't decided yet. I'm mainly thinking that since I own a Citadel Realm of Battle Gameboard from Games Workshop, it is 4x6' at it's largest size, with each tile being 2x2'. But Ex-Illis can come with a bunch of 1x1' tiles to make a battle board.... so I'm torn. But 2x2' would be a single GW tile or 4 Ex-Illis tiles.

Guess I'll be hitting various games forums to see what sizes are normal for certain games (I know that for 40k, WFB, AT-43 and Confrontation that bigger most of the time is better.) Some games like Warmachine are determined by the size of the Battle. Of course I'm going off of the original Prime book and not the Latest MKII rules. I'll be getting those once all the army books are out and I can just grab everything all at once.

But then I have games like Monsterpocalypse.... while technically a miniature game, it has a predetermined size map.... I've thought about actually creating modular maps for the game based on the size of the squares, but have not figured out how to lock them together. Once I figure that out... booyah! Plenty of that type of Gaming Goodness will be happening.

Then I also play Old West games like Gutshot Cowboy Wars, and Tombstones and Tumbleweeds. They can take decent size tables, especially when doing a reproduction of an authentic old west town.

Now a game like Chaos in Carpathia and its sci-fi version, Chaos on Chronos, can be played on a 2x2' or 4x4' play space.

See the dilemma on the table creation?

I'm sure I'll figure it out and it will be AWESOME!

WHOOT!

As in my last post, we got the house and we actually moved in over the Christmas school break (I took two weeks of holiday from work).

Moving over a holiday type week is not the brightest move I've made in my life. It was raining, it was cold and it took 7 truck loads (17ft) to get our stuff from out of the valley.

And it has taken me this long to post.... trying to get the townhouse ready for renting, trying to unpack... having to own a car now to get to where we need to go.

I never realized how much time was being wasted when we used to own a car. Having not owned one for 7 years, you get used to taking your time, but it's constructive time. You can read, talk on the phone... can't do that when your driving.

Lots has changed with this move. Biggest is my commute has shortened. I am now using a vanpool and I leave 1/2 hour later and get home at the same time, but I don't have to shuffle out 1/2 hour early and only take a 1/2 hour lunch. So that's nice. My coworkers appreciate my not running out to catch the bus. The vanpool is much more predictable and there are no smelly bums on it, or people who vomit in the middle of the isle.

I mentioned the bonus room, which is slowly coming together. I am going to be putting in a "workbench". It will be a kitchen counter top put in on one corner and run almost the length of one wall. That should give me plenty of room for a desk for my computer and when I'm on call with work, as well as painting/building station for mini's and terrain.

In the garage is a workshop and I finally got my drill press up and running. I had purchased it about 8 months ago and due to a water leak in the garage at the townhouse I was unable to set it up. So it sat in the box. Well I got it out of the box put it together and now I'm drilling like a MOFO! In what would take me 30 minutes with a hand drill, I was able to complete in about 15 minutes. That's HALF THE TIME! WHOOT!

So I'm hoping now that once the Townhouse is rented (we have someone lined up and they should be moving in the first of March) that will be off my plate and hopefully I can make a video of how to make the display boards I've been working on for all the Mini's I own. From concept to finished product.

And hopefully I won't ignore this blog too much. Yea I know wishful thinking ;).

Finally....

Well we finally got the house stuff all worked out.

Man am I glad. What a pain in the butt.

I had totally forgotten what a pain it is to buy a house. Shopping for the house... FUN! Deciding which house after you have seen a few... FUN! Paperwork to purchase the house.... NOT FUN! :D

And going with a VA backed loan drags the process out at least another two weeks.

But I am SO JAZZED that the process is over. Now we are doing some light cleaning (like carpets, walls, dusting) and a few repair items, we'll be moving in very soon.

The Bonus Room (where I'll be doing my actual gaming) is 12'x15'.... or 3.657 Meter's by 4.572 Meter's (for the European Community). Depending on how much the Diplay cases take up (as well as my Workstation), I'm thinking at least 2 4'x4' tables which can be combined into a 4'x8' table. If it's possible, I'll be putting in three or four 4'x4' tables. If that's not possible, I'll see about 4'x3' tables. Combining those would make two 4'x6' tables.

I'll be removing the shelves on the wall since I have my own bookcase and two display cases.

The Garage has a workshop. Although I'm going to have an electrician come out and check the Power Panel vs how many power tools I'll have running.

There is room for my drill press, but not for the table saw. That will have to go out in the garage.

I'll post more of course now that the "danger" has been averted. The valley could still flood, but I won't be in it.

Saga So Far

To continue on the "Flood" saga.....

We found a house on the East Hill that we liked and put in an offer. It was accepted. Before the economic downturn, I would not have been able to afford this house. But the house is really cool. Not only do I get a gaming room (aka the "Bonus Room"), I also get a workshop along with part of the 3 car garage to put my Radial Arm saw, routing table and other large power tools that will create a lot of wood dust and make it easy to clean up.

The workshop is really nice with a bench with power and shelving already in place. There is a place for my Drill press and other smaller power tools. Once I have everything in place I'll post pictures.

I'm jazzed because I can now, supposedly, have the room and ability to create all the terrain I want and actually have a place to paint mini's etc. This will allow me to finish the mini trays that I had been posting pictures of and I am hoping to actually make a tutorial that I can post on YouTube.

So stay tuned to this space for further updates. (Just an FYI we should be moving over the US Thanksgiving Day Holiday.) I should be posting more frequently (but then don't I always promise that? :D ).

Life

As usual it's been a while. Life always seems to happen just when you start enjoying yourself.

At the moment, there are two things going on in my life. The first is I now live in a flood plain.... WTF?!? how could I go from not living in a flood plain to living in one? It's called the Howard-Hansen Dam. Seems this Dam was built in the 1950's to keep the area where I live from flooding..... which caused it to no longer be classified as a flood zone. Now fast forward 50 years later and with climate change hitting the Pacific Northwest pretty hard (we now get rain like the East Coast gets, large, hard and lots of it, were before we got drizzle), instead of 90 days of drizzle, we get 90 days of OMG CATS and DOGS flowing from the sky.

So last year (2008) was a record year for the Dam. The Dam normally fills to 75% capacity. Last year it was 90%.... then the operators/care takers noticed "depressions" in the Dam... not a good thing. They drained it and discovered that it is no longer viable to hold massive amounts of water and it will take 8-10 years to fix..... whoops... so all of my inquiries into "Do I live in a flood plain" and being told "No" was a bunch of crap. There is a single point of failure in the logic that a flood plain is no longer a flood plain just because some Humans built a Dam and said so.

This brings me to point number two. In our strive to not have everything we own ruined by said coming flood... we have started to raise items in the Townhouse. So all the books/video's that are normally downstairs, are now upstairs... all the fun stuff in the Garage / Workshop is being moved to shelving I have put into the ceiling. This creates a much more open workspace. And that is awesome because I've been wanting more workspace. Of course that euphoria won't last long as all that extra space will be in 6-10' of water when the rains come.

With all the new workspace and hoping that the rains do not come or are not as bad as trending has shown it should be, I'll be working on a massive amount of stuff. The display boards I have not finished will finally get finished and photo's taken and posted.

Too bad that the "right now" is taken up by flood prep. But hopefully it will all work out in the end and I will have a cool workspace that won't flood.

Discovered this series of short movies while checking out Fallout 3 Vids on Youtube.

The DC Chronicles.

The Fallout 3 engine allows for scripted sequences and I found a series of video's on Youtube by member Drakortha and OMG! this guy is good.

Not only is the scripting very well done, but the writing and how it is presented is incredible.

There are 3 episodes up at the time of this post. It is highly recommended that you watch them, even if you are not a fan of the game.


My hats off to you Drakortha. Damn good job.

Blame Fallout 3

It has been quite a while since I posted last.

I blame Fallout 3 for my absence. I have been sucked in, hook, line, sinker and life time subscription to Anglers Monthly.

I am still plugging away at the ORK-43 rules as well. Just not as quickly thanks to Fallout 3. (By the way I DO RECOMMEND that you get this game and play it).

I wish it had a co-op mode, but it does not and that is very sad. Having a few "buds" with you as you explore the Capital Wasteland would have been awesome.

Oh well. I have have land to explore and Karma to gain or lose!

Computers Suck

We had a power outage a week or so ago and my PC started acting up. So it became so bad that I really, really needed to get a new box.

So I got an iMac. I've been a PC "dude" since 1982 when the original IBM PC came out. Now I'm a UNIX Guru, having Linux or FreeBSD boxes in and out around the house, but supporting and having to constantly rebuild or compile my own drivers, etc... sucks. So I wanted a Unix variant that was supported by manufacturers and a company that would actually fix bugs that are reported and I don't have to compile anything.... unless I write it myself.

So now things are being ported over and hopefully I will be done soon.

Oh, why an iMac and not a MacBook Pro? Twenty Four Inches of Real Estate... now I have 48" of screen.... OMG!!! So the iMac has a 24" built in monitor and I have a 24" Dell monitor from my Windows Box. WHOOOT!!!!

Once I get stuff converted over and transferred, etc, etc. I'll be posting more!

Necron Display Board (WIP)

I thought I'd document my Necron display board. I'll be using the same method to create boards for other armies. Not just for Warhammer 40k, but for AT-43, etc.


I have a set of Hole Saws, but I purchased them at Harbor Freight and I'm not thrilled with the sizes or that the 1" (25mm) one cracked on first use. So I purchased some Forstner bits and those are wonderful. The MDF board is a little hard, but with some patients it works well.

I should be able to use these bits to drill down into thicker wood to just the right depth. So making really nice wood boards should definitely be possible.









I put marks and made lines every 5cm since all the miniature bases I use are in millimeter and not inches. So the board gets covered with 5mm squares, I then place a base on the board and mark the corners of where a square would fit around it, then I draw lines between them, making an X. The X is where the drill bit goes for a nice cut. I have been spacing the small bases (25-40mm) 10mm apart just for strength. Since I'll be gluing this to metal, it probably won't matter, but I want to be sure.

As you can see, besides the Ork-43 conversion I'm doing, I also have other projects that I'm trying to get done.

So much to do, so little time.

I've created my first Type * (1) infantry unit for Ork-43 (what I'm calling my conversion of Warhammer 40k Orks to AT-43). Please be reminded that no playtesting has been done yet so when all is said and done, this might not be balanced.... YET! Once I have all the units and costs done my group will be play testing and modifications will be made. Once the whole document is finished, I will be posting the "Army Book" and people will be able to download it for free. I will also try to come up with Cards for these units. If anyone knows a good artist that would like to volunteer for that job, I'd be glad to have the help. Otherwise people will be stuck with my crappy photoshop skills.

Mekanik: The mekanik has the "Repair" ability. At the beginning or at the end of his unit's activation he can repair a friendly armored fighting vehicle within 2.5cm of him. The armored fighting vehicle recovers 1 SP in a location chosen by the player. Destroyed parts may be repaired.

A Gretchin officer cannot be the Company Commander of any Ork company unless Gretchen are the only Ork unit on the field even if there are Ork units that do not contain an officer that are not Gretchin.

Ork Special Rules

I've been thinking Hard about Ork special rules. Rules that only pertain to them that would help balance out the Large number of models that players will be able to field.

So here's what I've come up with at the Moment.

WAAAAAGH! (Card inserted into activation) move all orc units up to 6cm. If orc units come into contact with enemy units, orc units may make a Combat attack. If attacked unit is destroyed, then unit may move another 6cm. If contact is made with an enemy unit, a combat attack may be made (lather, rise, repeat).

Mob Rule: Orcs are brave as long as there is another orc around to compete with for glory and bloodshed. Orc Infantry units do not roll morale checks due to loses until there is only one model left unless specified by another rule such as a faction special rule.

Recycled Technology: Orcs equipment is used / scavanged from previous battlefields and the ranged weapons re designed to make big boom noises, hence they are prone to misfirings. When Type 1 or Type 2 Ork Infantry Units make shooting attacks, only 1/2 of the unit may shoot, the other half is clearing jammed weapons.

Furious Charge: On the Activation where an Orc unit enters into combat, attack roll required is read as one result better (ie 4+ is now a 3+).

"Shuddup 'n listen ta me!": An Ork officer may execute one member of the ork unit he is attached to instead of spending LP in order to take a unit from Disorganized to Valiant.

On the Officer Titles: I have come to realize that there are characters like Kaptain Badruck (or what ever his name is). So I've come to the conclusion that Orks have similar titles for their leaders as humans do except the Warboss. That title will be reserved for the Rank 5 position. So I'll be posting an update list of the officer titles in the next post.
